What is Translation Management System ?
A Translation management system (TMS) is a type of software for automating many parts of the human language translation process and maximizing translation efficiency. The objective of a translation management system is to automate all repeatable and non-essential work that can be done by software/systems, thus leaving only the creative work of translation and review to be done by human beings. A translation management system generally includes at least two types of technology: process management technology to automate the flow of work, and linguistic technology to aid the translator.
Here are the main features & benefits a translation management system brings:
Workflow management: Automating processes, managing documents, facilitating communication between the different team members, and generally speeding things up and making them more efficient and less costly.
Translation memory management: Translation management systems centrally maintain a database of previously translated phrases and fragments, commonly referred as a translation memory. In an environment where translation volume is high, translation memories will not only save money but will also help maintain consistency by providing translators reference to previously translated material.
Terminology management: Similar to translation memories, terminology databases hold translations of terms and branding. It is critical to maintain and use a terminology database to ensure consistency in branding across regions and languages.
